Tetanus Injection & Rabies Vaccine Services in Lagos
Tetanus and rabies vaccination in Lagos
Tetanus and rabies are both preventable with vaccination, but they require quick action when exposure occurs. If you have stepped on a rusty nail, sustained a deep cut, been bitten by a dog, or been scratched by an animal of unknown vaccination status, getting the right vaccine quickly can save your life.
ExCare Health provides both tetanus and rabies vaccinations at our clinical locations across Lagos. Walk-in patients are always welcome.
Tetanus vaccination
Tetanus is caused by bacteria that enter the body through wounds, cuts, and punctures. The disease affects the nervous system and can be fatal if untreated. Vaccination is the only reliable protection.
If you have a wound and are unsure when you last received a tetanus shot, visit any ExCare branch for an assessment. If your last booster was more than five years ago (or if you cannot remember), our team will administer a tetanus toxoid injection on the spot. The injection takes less than a minute, and you can leave immediately after.
For ongoing protection, tetanus boosters are recommended every ten years. Our staff can check your records and advise on your schedule.
Rabies vaccination
Rabies is a viral disease transmitted through the saliva of infected animals, most commonly through dog bites. Once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal. Post-exposure vaccination is the only treatment, and it must be started as soon as possible after the bite.
If you or someone you know has been bitten by a dog, cat, bat, or any wild animal, come to ExCare immediately. Do not wait to see if symptoms develop. Our clinical team will clean the wound, assess the risk, and begin the post-exposure vaccination course if needed.
The rabies post-exposure course typically involves four or five injections given over a two-week period. The first dose should be given on the day of the bite or as soon as possible after.
Pre-exposure rabies vaccination is also available for people at higher risk, including veterinarians, animal handlers, and travellers heading to areas where rabies is common.
